DeAnn,  are you using enough fat (butter, olive oil, etc.) in your breads?
It seems to me that dry bread is more often caused by lack of butter than
lack of water.  I don't know about your stumpies :-) but perhaps there is a
problem with your machine since they used to be stilts and are now stumps.
